SBC-GX1 Windows XP Embedded Quickstart Using PXE to remote boot Windows XP Embedded
Using PXE to remote boot Windows XP Embedded
The SBC-GX1 BIOS supports PXE remote booting. This allows Windows XP
Embedded to run on the SBC-GX1 without a CompactFlash module. For a detailed
description of how remote booting with Windows XP Embedded works, please refer to
the following website:
msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/xp/deploy/rmboot/
PXE booting uses some of the available RAM on the SBC-GX1 as a virtual disk drive.
This means that the amount of RAM available for the operating system and applications
is decreased significantly. The general rule for PXE booting Windows XP Embedded is
that the maximum amount of RAM that can be allocated for the virtual disk can be, at
most, half of the available RAM on the SBC-GX1. Subsequently, as the SBC-GX1 is
supplied with 256MB RAM, the maximum disk image size that can be used with PXE
booting is 128MB.
Neither of the images supplied with this Development Kit are small enough to be used
with PXE booting. If you want to build your own image, or customise one of the Arcom
supplied images to make it smaller, you must use Target Designer to remove unwanted
components.
To make use of PXE booting, you need an appropriately configured DHCP server
attached to your network. You also need to have the Remote Boot Tools from
Windows Embedded Studio installed on a development machine / server on your
network.
For detailed instructions of how to create a PXE bootable disk image, and deploy it
using Remote Boot Tools, please refer to this website:
