Connecting to the server directly
To access the server directly, use a computer with the following minimum specifications:
A Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system
32-MB of RAM
40-MB of available disk space
An RS-232 port connector
A network interface card (NIC) with a 10/100BaseT Ethernet interface
A 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, category 5 or better, cross-over cable with an RJ45 connector
on each end (MDI to MDI-X)
A CD-ROM drive
1. Plug one end of the CAT5 cross-over cable into the Services access port on the server
faceplate. For more information, see Services laptop computer connected directly to the
S8400 Server on page 72.
2. Plug the other end of the CAT5 cross-over cable into the NIC on your computer. Use a NIC
adapter if necessary.
3. Configure your network connection
IP address: 192.11.13.5
Subnetwork mask: 255.255.255.252
For specific information, see Configuring the network for Windows 2000 and XP
on
page 76.
Once you connect, use a terminal emulation program or a Web browser to administer the
server.
