Maintenance
Servicing and Maintaining Your Empulse 67
DRIVE CHAIN
Note: Before commencing any work on your Empulse, refer toSAFETY
PRECAUTIONS”, p a g e 3 6 .
A 86-link (2014 models: 84 link) 520 ISO X-Ring Chain connects the
motors 14 tooth sprocket to the rear wheel’s 38 tooth sprocket.
The service life of the chain depends on proper lubrication and
adjustment. Poor maintenance can cause premature wear or
damage to the drive chain or sprockets. The drive chain should be
checked, adjusted, and lubricated as part of the pre-ride inspection
(see
PRE-RIDE INSPECTION”, p a g e 1 8 ). Under severe usage, or when
the Empulse is ridden in unusually dusty or muddy areas, more
frequent maintenance will be necessary.
Before servicing your drive chain, turn the ignition switch to the Off
position and lower the kickstand. It is not necessary to remove the
drive chain to perform the recommended service in the
maintenance schedule.
Inspection
Note: The tension of the drive chain should be checked (and adjusted, if
necessary) every 300 miles (500 km)
The Empulse should be supported using a rear wheel stand when
checking the chain tension.
Check the tension in the lower drive chain at the mid point between
the sprockets, this is approximately level with the edge of the tire.
The vertical deflection in the drive chain (A) should be measured
using hand force only (no greater than 1kg (2.2lbs)) and should not
exceed 17mm.
Rotate the wheel, and repeat the measurement at the same point
midway between the sprockets.
