Decompression

Decompression of a pneumothorax
can be performed bilaterally by
inserting a needle at the
midclavicular line of the second
intercostal space.
The instructor
must adjust the
amount of
physiologic
intrapleural air
present.

Intrapleural Vol:

Laryngospasm

Closes the patient’s vocal cords and
prevents both ventilation and
intubation.

Pharynx
Swelling/
Airway
Occlusion
Swelling of the posterior
oropharynx (posterior airway
occlusion) obstructs the view of the
larynx and prevents intubation, but
allows mask ventilation of the
patient’s lungs, thereby creating a
“cannot intubate, can ventilate”
scenario.
