Replacing a Power Supply Module
The 5150 uses two power supply modules. The power supplies are redundant
in the event of a failure. However, since the system cooling is provided by
integrated fans in the power modules, both power modules need to be
installed to operate the system. The fans in an installed but non-functional
power supply module will continue to operate and cool the system. A failed
power supply should be replaced within a reasonable time frame to restore
redundancy to the system.
An overview of the power supply modules and fans is included in 39XX/51XX
Product Fundamentals.
The procedures for replacing AC and DC power supplies are slightly different.
Use the instructions that match the type of power supply used for your
installation. See the related procedures:
• “To Replace an AC Power Supply Module” on page 4-7
• “To Replace a DC Power Supply Module” on page 4-9
Replacing an AC Power Supply Module
You require two AC power supply modules in the 5150. Because the power
supplies are redundant, you will be able to replace an AC power supply while
the unit is operating. The remaining AC power supply will compensate to
maintain uninterrupted system operation.
See “To Replace an AC Power Supply Module” on page 4-7 for a procedure.
Replacing a DC Power Supply Module
In order to successfully replace the power supply while the unit is operating,
the DC power supplies must be powered off separate breakers. This allows
you to turn off power feeding the power supply that is being replaced. While
the second independent circuit remains on, and powers the unit during the
replacement process. As a result, Ciena recommends that each DC power
supply be connected to a separate breaker.
If the power supplies are both powered off the same breaker, the power supply
replacement will be a service impacting maintenance.
See “To Replace a DC Power Supply Module” on page 4-9 for a procedure.
