Overview 1-
The Ciena Service Aggregation Switch (SAS) product family provides
Ethernet connectivity to buildings and residences to deliver high-speed voice,
video, and data connectivity. SAS devices are designed to lower the overall
cost of deploying a fiber network.
The 5160 is a Service Aggregation Switch that provides both Gigabit Ethernet
and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The 5160 is based on Ciena Corporation’s
field-proven Carrier Ethernet technology which is deployed by dozens of
network operators in tens-of-thousands of homes and businesses. The 5160
combines the low cost and high capacity of Ethernet with the reliability,
management, and service quality associated with SONET and TDM.
The 5160 uses the Ciena Service Aware Operating System (SAOS) version
6.11 or higher. A full description of the various products in the portfolio,
including a full hardware overview of the 5160, is contained in 39XX/51XX
Product Fundamentals. See Figure 1-1.
