Operation
The age-adjusted MAC values are calculated according to the equation of W.W.
Mapleson (British Journal of Anaesthesia 1996, pp. 179-185).
The equation applies to patients older than 1 year.
MAC
age-adjusted = MAC
1)
x 10
(–0.00269 x (age –40))
8.6.1.1 Example
Exp. Isoflurane = 0.65 Vol%
Exp. N
2O = 69 %
Age = 32 years
MAC
age-adjusted for Iso: MAC
2)
= 1.21 Vol%
MAC
age-adjusted for N2O: MAC
2)
= 110 Vol%
xMAC = 0.54 + 0.63 = 1.2
The influence of other drugs (opioids or intravenous hypnotics) is not considered in
the xMAC calculation.
8.6.1.2 Using the xMAC display
CAUTION
Risk of patient injury due to inaccurate MAC values
The integrated MAC algorithm is based on values determined and defined by
Dräger. These values are guiding values only. The binding values are specified on
the package information leaflet of the anesthetic agent.
► Do not base therapy decisions solely on the xMAC display, but also always
consider the information in the package information leaflets of the anesthetic
agents.
● Use the MAC display as an orientation for anesthetic agent delivery.
1) 40 years
For gas mixtures, the respective multiples for N2O and anesthetic agents are
summed up according to the following equation:
xMAC =
