8.5 Fibre Stripping Instructions
The equipment used for stripping the coating off the fibre bundles is shown in the first two photographs.
Fibre Unit Sheath Stripper
This is the tool recommend for the stripping of the outer sheath from the fibre bundles. It is available from
Emtelle (Product Code 7299). The blades are adjusted by means of slackening the small clamp screw and
moving the blade to the desired position and then tightening the screw. The blade will need to be set for
each type of fibre bundle (eg. 12fu, 8fu etc).
Fibre Stripper 10A
This tool is used to remove the acrylate from the individual fibres. To use it simply place the fibre unit
in the v-shaped groove, gently squeeze and pull the acrylate from the fibre. The fibre stripper 10A is
available from Emtelle (Product Code 7335).
Fibre Stripping Procedure
Place the fibre unit between the jaws of the cutter, sitting it in the V-shaped groove, at the length of outer
sheath to be removed. Hold the cutter stationary in one hand, and with the jaws closed, rotate the fibre
a full 360°, ensuring the outer sheath has been completely cut. Lengths of 300mm maximum of outer
sheath can be removed at one time. The result should be the easy removal of the sheath.
If the sheath doesn’t come off, check to see if the cut is completely 360°, or if the cut is deep enough.
When removing the sheath make sure that it is pulled/pushed from the point where you made the cut. If
you try to pull it from the end, the sheath can neck down onto the FU core and be difficult to remove.
Take care not to cut too deep as this will damage the fibre
Once the outer sheath has been removed, the resin layer must now be stripped away. Taking the fibre
strippers in one hand place them about 30mm from the end of the fibre as shown opposite
Squeeze the strippers down gently to scrape away the resin coating. Repeat this until all the resin has
been removed and the individual fibres are revealed.
Do not squeeze too hard, or individual fibres may break
The fibres must now be separated into two even bundles as shown.
For 4 way it is 2 + 2
For 8 way it is 4 + 4
For 12 way it is 6 + 6
It is important that the bundle is split evenly to give maximum strength for the next step.
NOTE: The 2 fibre unit contains 2 ‘dummy’ fibres. They are also glass and must be disposed of correctly.
Ensure that the fibres in each bundle are from the same side of the assembly (do not cross over)
Hold the two evenly split bundles in two hands and slowly pull apart to the desired length, careful not to
snap any of the fibres. Once the two halves have been pared back to the desired length the resin needs to
be removed.
