9.12.4 Fibre Coiler 1A (7004)
The coiler feeds excess fibre unit into a pan, in such a way that it can be re-blown later:
There are occasions when it is necessary to re- coil fibre unit into a pan, in the
same way as it is coiled when manufactured. The coil, each loop of which is 415mm
diameter, is laid in rosette fashion, with the centre moving with each turn, so each
new turn does not fall exactly onto the last, and this produces a form which tends not
to tangle when feeding out.
The machine that creates this moving pattern sits inside the pan’s 330mm inner
diameter. It consists of a central body housing the motor, an output shaft emerging
at the top, and then a removable multi-geared head that feeds the fibre with the
necessary rosette motion.
Setting up:
Fit the empty pan over the body. For short pans, a support is used, so the pan rim is in-line with the coiler rim. See photo. Fit the rotating
head on the top shaft, pressing the locating button to get correct gear drive. When the head is rotated, the drive wheel should turn also.
Note there are different drive wheels for different sizes of fibre unit. Fit the correct one. Check the fibre feed from steel plate to wheel
groove is good. Then fit a Fibre Guide Arm over the pan, held on the pan edge. Make the electrical connections to the control box and
power supply. When switched on, the head should rotate. Feed the fibre unit down through the pan guide and tape it to the pan base. Feed
it carefully under the drive guide on the head. Now when switched on, the head should lay the fibre into the pan as it rotates. Check the
grip is good and the fibre coils correctly. The coiler should coil at whatever speed the fibre is fed to it, and stop if necessary; no tensioning
devices are used.
