plan your installation. Proper planning for your new system facilitates a smooth installation and a fast
system start.
The use of the terms, “server”, “processor”, “system”, and “all models” in the following information refer
to the IBM Storage Scale System 6000.
Site preparation and physical planning
For detailed guidelines about site preparation and physical planning, see the Site preparation and physical
planning document.
Planning for hardware installation
Before the IBM SSR installs the system, you must plan the physical conguration and the initial data
conguration.
Certain physical site specications must be met before you can set up your system. This activity includes
verifying that adequate space is available, and that requirements for power, network and environmental
conditions are met.
Important: The IBM SSR refers to these system conguration details when they perform the system
installation, so it is important that these records are complete and accurate.
1. Review all the guidelines in the Planning topics to understand where the system can be installed and
identify all prerequisites, such as building structure, equipment rack, environmental controls, power
supply, and accessibility.
If there are dependencies identied, you need to resolve them before the IBM SSR installs your system
hardware.
2. Use the hardware locations of enclosures and other devices to identify the rack locations where the
IBM SSR will install each enclosure.
Planning for racks
Plan for IBM or non-IBM racks according to the IBM Storage Scale System 6000 requirements.
For detailed rack specication information about the 5149-R42 rack and the 7965-S42 rack, see Planning
for the 7965-S42 rack.
If you do not have a 5149-R42 rack or 7965-S42 rack and want to install the system into a non-IBM rack,
see “IBM Storage Scale System 6000 requirements” on page 21. Ensure that the physical environment
meets the specied requirements, such as rack space, power, and environmental conditions.
Reviewing IBM Storage Scale System 6000 location guidelines
Consult these guidelines when you plan the location of an IBM Storage Scale System 6000 and any
existing IBM Storage Scale System in your environment, including any IBM Storage Scale client or
protocol node.
IBM Storage Scale System 6000 contains two server canisters. Each IBM Storage Scale System 6000
cluster consists of the following components:
• One or more IBM Storage Scale System 6000 systems – in a rack, each system requires a space of 4U
(standard rack units).
• One EMS node (IBM Storage Scale System Utility Node) – in rack, requires a space of 2U (standard rack
units).
• 1 GbE network switch for management network – in rack, requires a space of 1U (standard rack units).
• High-speed InniBand or Ethernet network for internode communication – in rack, requires a space of
1U (standard rack units).
