4. Determine whether the repair operation can continue when the system power is turned on.
To continue the repair operation when the system power is turned on, the following conditions must
be true:
• Fans must be installed in all three slots.
Each of the three fans has a green LED and an amber LED, as shown in Figure 75 on page 88. The
green LED is lit solid for all fans, but the fan with the failure has a flashing amber fault LED.
• If only one amber fault LED is On, the repair operation can be completed when the system power is
turned on.

5. Ensure that the amber LED corresponds to the location of the fan with the lit fault LED.
6. If you can complete the procedure with the system power turned on, continue with step “8” on page
88.
7. If you powered off the system earlier in this procedure or you want to power off the system to
complete the repair operation, complete the following steps:
a) If the system is powered off, continue with step “7.b” on page 88. Otherwise, prepare to power
off the system.
Attention:
Ensure that you shut down the running logical partitions on the managed system
before you power off the managed system. Powering off the managed system without
shutting down the logical partitions rst causes the logical partitions to shut down
abnormally and can cause data loss. If you use a Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) logical partition,
ensure that all clients are shut down or that the clients have access to their devices by using
an alternative method.
When you are ready to power off the system, from the Operation list, select System Level
Deactivate. Then, click OK to conrm the operation.
b) From the Operation list, select FRU Level Deactivate. Then, click OK to conrm the operation.
c) Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system (www.ibm.com/support/
knowledgecenter/POWER9/p9haj/crustopsys.htm).
8. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
The ESD wrist strap must be connected to an unpainted metal surface until the service procedure is
completed, and if applicable, until the service access cover is replaced.
