Ground control points can be used to improve map accuracy. Ground control points should be
physically visible in the point cloud. Flat reflectance targets should be perpendicular to the
scanner.
Consider the final point cloud size/density you want and plan accordingly. As a rule of thumb, you
can set the maximum number of points for the preview scan. For the VLP-16, you a good starting
place is 1,000,000 points per minute. For a 2 hour scan, you can set maxPointNum to 120,000.
Best to scan with fewer people or moving objects around. They add unnecessary points to the
registered cloud.
Stencil 2 is rated for commercial temperatures only. For below freezing (0°C or 32°F) wrap
something around Stencil to keep some of the heat in. For hotter temperatures (35°C or95°F) keep
Stencil out of the sun.
Read the descriptions of the parameters in the Parameter section. They provide additional specific
guidance for other applications.
HANDHELD SCANNING - INDOORS
At the start of mapping, wait for points to show up on the monitor or status light to be blinking
green, then rotate Stencil 2 slowly while rolling and pitching slightly before moving around to build
a denser base map to start from.
When transitioning between larger rooms or turning corners, move a little slower to build up the
new area before proceeding.
Make turns with the LIDAR level to the floor. Don’t turn and tilt at the same time.
Do not start scanning in a corner or near a wall. It is better to start in the center of the room.
For smaller rooms, adjust blindRadius to 0.5 meters.
When ascending/descending stairs, orient the sensor parallel to the pitch of the stairs.
For large areas, it is best to hold the scanner above your head to get the overall outline of the
room. This will help eliminate any drift while walking around.
For longer scan times, consider a holster or support to avoid arm fatigue.
Indoor scans in tighter spaces will need to be replayed with specific parameters to create the best
results.
HANDHELD SCANNING - OUTDOORS
For vertical scanning, tilt the lidar up to 60 degrees while standing still, but do not tilt and rotate at
the same time. For tilts of this magnitude, be sure to use the feature tracker.
