Troubleshootingprocedure
Usethefollowinginformationasageneralprocedurefordiagnosingandtroubleshootingproblemsyou
experiencewithyourserver:
1.Verifythatthepowercordsandthecablesforallattacheddevicesareconnectedproperlyandsecurely.
2.Verifythattheserverandallattacheddevicesthatrequireacpowerareconnectedtoproperlygrounded,
functioningelectricaloutlets.
3.VerifythatallinstalledhardwareandattacheddevicesareenabledintheBIOSsettingsofyourserver.

4.ViewthestatusanddiagnosticLEDstoidentifythesystemanddevicestatusanddiagnoseproblems.

5.Iftheserverisnotworkingafteryouhaveaddednewsoftware,installedanewoptionaldevice,or
replacedapieceofhardware,removeorreinstallthesoftwareordevicetoseeiftheproblemcould
besolved.
6.TurnontheserverandpressEscassoonasyouseethelogoscreentoviewanydiagnosticmessages.
7.Downloadanduseadiagnosticprogramtodiagnoseproblems.See“LenovoThinkServerDiagnostics”
onpage12
.
8.Referto“Basictroubleshootingtables”onpage126andfollowtheinstructionsforthetypeofproblem
youareexperiencing.Ifthebasictroubleshootinginformationdoesnothelpyouresolveaproblem,
continuewiththenextstep.
9.Tryusingapreviousserverconfigurationtoseeifarecentchangetohardwareorsoftwaresettingshas
causedaproblem.Beforerestoringyourpreviousconfiguration,captureyourcurrentconfigurationin
casetheolderconfigurationsettingsdonotsolvetheproblemorhaveadverseeffect.
10.Useanantivirusprogramtoseeifyourserverhasbeeninfectedbyavirus.Iftheprogramdetectsa
virus,removethevirus.
11.Ifnoneoftheseactionssolvetheproblem,seektechnicalassistance.SeeChapter7“Getting

ViewingthestatusanddiagnosticLEDs
YourserverhasstatusanddiagnosticLEDsonthefrontpanel,therearpanel(EthernetstatusLEDs),the
systemboard,thehot-swapHDDs(ifsupported),andtheopticaldrives.ThevariousLEDshelpyoueasily
identifythesystemanddevicestatusanddiagnoseproblems.ForinformationabouttheLEDs,refertothe
relatedtopicsin“Componentlocations”onpage12.
Viewingthesystemeventlog
Thesystemeventlog(SEL)containsinformationaboutallthePOSTandsystemmanagementinterrupt(SMI)
events.YoucanviewtheSELtodiagnosesystemproblems.
