•Donotattempttoliftanobjectthatyouthinkistooheavyforyou.Ifyouhavetoliftaheavyobject,
observethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
–Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
–Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouliftaheavyobject.
–Toavoidstrainingthemusclesinyourback,liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles.
•Ensurethatyouhaveenoughproperlygroundedelectricaloutletsfortheserver,monitor,andother
devices.
•Backupallimportantdatabeforeyoumakechangestodrives.
•Haveasmallflat-bladescrewdriveravailable.
•Youdonothavetoturnofftheservertoinstallorreplaceahot-swapredundantpowersupply,hot-swap
harddiskdrives,orhot-plugUSBdevices.However,youmustturnofftheserverbeforeperforming
anystepsthatinvolveinstalling,removing,orreplacingadaptercablesornon-hot-swapdevicesor
components.
•ToviewtheLEDsonthesystemboardandinternalcomponents,leavetheserverconnectedtopower.
•Whenyouarefinishedworkingontheserver,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.
•Whenworkinginsidetheserver,youmightfindsometaskseasierifyoulaytheserveronitsside.
Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices
Attention:Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainsthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeen
removedfromtheserverandyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,
canseriouslydamageservercomponentsandparts.
Whenyouhandleserverpartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Theuseofagroundingsystemisrecommended.Forexample,wearanelectrostaticdischarge(ESD)
wriststrap,ifoneisavailable.EnsurethatyouworkinanESD-safearea.
•Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomponents(suchasPCIecards,memorymodules,system
boards,andCPUs)byitsedgesoritsframe.Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
•Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleandpossiblydamagethedevice.
•Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoan
unpaintedmetalpartoftheserverforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthe
packageandyourbody.
•Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitintheserverwithoutplacing
itonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecificsituation,placethestatic-protective
packageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewpartonthestatic-protective
package.Donotplacethepartontheservercoverorothermetalsurface.
•Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.

•AlldrivebaysandPCIecardslotsareeitheroccupiedbydrivesandcardsorcoveredbyelectromagnetic
interface(EMI)protectivepanelsorEMIshields.WhenyouinstallaninternaldriveoraPCIecard,
savetheEMIshieldordummytrayfromthedrivebayorsavethePCIecardslotbracketincaseyou
laterremovethedevice.
