maXim Operator Manual Getting Connected
LSC Lighting Systems (Aust) Pty. Ltd. Page 5 of 66
2.0 GETTING CONNECTED
2.1 POWER INPUT
An IEC mains input socket is located on the rear panel and a mains power lead is provided. The
maXim has a universal power supply that will operate on voltages between 90 volts and 260 volts
with a frequency range from 47 to 63 HZ.
Plug the mains lead into the MAINS INPUT socket and connect it to a source of mains power.
2.2 DIGITAL OUTPUTS (DMX 512/1990)
The maXim S and M models have a single DMX 512 connector and the L, XL and XXL have two
DMX 512 connectors, one for “Universe 1 DMX channels” and the second for “Universe 2 DMX
channels”. Connect a DMX data cable from the Universe 1 DMX512 output of the maXim to the
DMX512 input of your equipment (dimmers, moving fixtures etc) and set the required channel
address on your equipment. Universe 2 is used for complex setups involving more than 512
channels.
Note: DMX512/1990 together with some typical setups and address settings are described in
“Appendix A” at the end of this manual.
2.3 VIDEO MONITOR
Connect a SVGA (or better) computer monitor to the 15 pin VIDEO connector on the rear of the
maXim. Video is an option on the S and M models. See “VIDEO” in the “UTILITIES” chapter for
details.
2.4 SWITCHING ON
At this point, with the mains power and DMX connected, the maXim is ready to be operated. Simply
switch on the “POWER” switch located near the mains input connector. The maXim will commence
its start up procedures. After briefly displaying the opening message, the maXim will commence
operating in exactly the same state that it was in when it was last switched off. All the scenes,
stacks, chases, patches etc will be as they were.
Hint; If you are starting a new lighting session, LSC recommends that you perform a “TOTAL RESET”
of the maXim. This will ERASE all previously recorded memories and will prevent you being confused
by previous recordings and settings. If you need to keep your memories, save them to disk (optional
on S & M models) before resetting. See the “QUICKSTART TUTORIAL” or “UTILITIES” chapters for
details.
You are now ready to start controlling your lights as described in the “QUICKSTART TUTORIAL”
chapter, but before you do, the next chapter gives you a guided tour of the front panel controls of
the maXim.
NOTE: In the event of a short loss of mains power (a “brown out”) the maXim will continue to operate
for a few seconds due to the storage capacity of its internal power supply. When you switch off your
maXim you will hear a click followed a few seconds later by another click. The maXim keeps
operating until the second click is heard.
When the maXim is switched on, it will resume operating in the same state as it was when it was
switched off.
