• Note which size console you are upgrading.
• On the computer, type the following command according to the console size you are upgrading:
ms for maXim S.
mm for maXim M.
ml for maXim L.
mxl for maXim XL.
mxxl for maXim XXL.
Note: Your PC generally has a minimum of two serial ports named COM1 and COM2. On a PC these
are commonly used for controlling modems and an older style mouse. mLINK needs to know which of
these two ports the maXim is connected to. It defaults to COM1. If your computer has a mouse,
modem or some other device connected to COM1, you will need to COM2. The commands above use
COM1 as the default. If you are using COM2, the command typed must include a space and the
number 2 after the above commands. e.g. “ms 2”.
.Turn the maXim ON.
• The upgrade process will begin. Dots will be printed to the computer screen as each record is
written to the maXim. This will take some time.
• When the update is complete, “EndRecord” will be shown on the computer screen after which
the maXim will restart and display latest version number on the scrolling display.
• The maXim is now ready for normal operation.
• You can exit the DOS window on Windows by typing “exit”
• Should you need to stop the mLINK program, hold down the control button (Cntl) and push the
Z button. (^Z)
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you are experiencing problems with the upgrade try the following hints:
• Check which COM port you are using and that you are entering the correct command for
that port.
• For any maXim that has an options card installed (Includes maXim L, XL and XXL or S and
M if they have a disk or video), the mLINK connection depends on pin 1 of the 5 Pin Cannon
Male being connected to mains ground. If you are using a PC to update the maXim then this
should happen naturally. However if you are using a laptop to update the software then
please ensure that pin 1 and the case on the 5 Pin Cannon Male connector are connected
together (as specified below in the cable details) or mLINK will not be able to communicate
with the maXim.
• The maXim requires the PC to respond to its initial request within a certain amount of time.
If your PC is slow and/or doesn’t respond to this request within the required time, the maXim
will conclude that there is no mLINK attached and will move to its normal operation mode.
This is very hard to predict, as it is very PC dependent.
If you are using Windows 95 or 98 try starting the PC in MSDOS mode. This usually solves
the problem. If you are running a different version of Windows try running mLINK in a
window or as a full screen (Hold down the ALT button and push the enter button to change
between these modes.
• If there still appears to be no communication at this point, then the next step is to put the
mLINK program into verbose mode.
Type dir at the command prompt and look for the file for the maXim size you are updating.
This will be a file name similar to those listed below. The 080 (used here as an example) is
the version number of the software. That is, for version 0.80 the file name will be
mx12v080.s19. The numbers you see may be different depending on the version of
software you are upgrading to.
