Removing and installing thermostats

Remove the three mounting bolts from the coolant
neck and take off coolant neck.

Take out short-circuit inserts / thermostats.
Check the function of the thermostats as fol-
lows.
D Suspend the thermostat in a bowl of water
D Heat up the water
D Use suitable thermometer to ascertain the
opening start and compare it with the set-point
value given in “Service Data”.
D If necessary, measure the opening stroke
Replace defective thermostats.
Insert thermostat inserts ball valve facing upwards
(“TOP”) with new O-ring seal and new seal.
Caution:
Never let engine run without thermostats
or short-circuit inserts.
