5 Operational Verification
PERFORM A REFERENCE MATERIAL ANALYSIS
Perform this analysis with carbon black reference material using nitrogen as the analysis gas.
1. Go to Unit [n] >Sample Analysis.
2. In the Port 1 group box, click Browse. Locate and select the Carbon 1.SMPfile. Click OK.
3. In the Port 2 group box, click Browse. Locate and select the Carbon 2.SMPfile. Click OK.
4. In the Port 3 group box, click Browse. Locate and select the Carbon 3.SMPfile. Click OK.
5. Click Start.The analysis begins.
6. When the analyses are complete, look at the reports for various ports to see if the BET Sur-
face Area shown on the Summary Report matches within the tolerance level shown on the ref-
erence material bottle.
7. If the BETSurface Area values do not match, refer to the causes and actions below.
Cause: The sample was not degassed properly.
Action: Degas the sample and try again.
Cause: The gas lines are not clean enough.
Action: Perform the procedure and verify gas lines, then try again.
Cause: The measured free space is too high, indicating that the helium is not pure enough.
Action: Use helium that is 99.999% pure, then try again.
8. Retain a copy of the sample information file to return to the Micromeritics Service Support
Center.
9. Attach the printed reports to the Installation Checklist to be returned to Micromeritics.
