7.1.3 Pad Safe System (PSS)
The gi4000 ESU is equipped with the Pad Safe System (PSS), assuring adequate contact
between the patient and the dispersive electrode. This system constantly monitors patient/pad
contact resistance when used with a sensing/split dispersive electrode and will prevent output
if contact falls below a safe level, reducing the risk of thermal injuries to the patient.
The Pad Safe System features a tri-colored LED indicator light (RED, YELLOW, GREEN)
which provides visual indication to the operator of the current state of the PSS.
Red PSS Indicator Light
When the PSS light is RED, action by the operator is required before administering energy.
Possible causes of the RED indicator light include:
• No dispersive electrode is attached to the gi4000 ESU OR
• a Sensing/Split dispersive electrode is attached to the gi4000 ESU, but not sufficiently
applied to the patient OR
• a Sensing/Split dispersive electrode is both attached to the generator and to the patient,
but an unsafe situation is detected OR
• a dispersive electrode fault unsafe situation is detected with either type of pad while
energy is being delivered OR
• a Sensing/Split dispersive electrode was attached to the patient while the generator was
in STANDBY Mode.
• Connect dispersive electrode to gi4000 ESU.
• Verify positive connection of dispersive electrode
connector in PSS Return Receptacle.
• Verify proper application of Sensing dispersive
electrode on patient per manufacturer instructions.
• Verify positive connection of dispersive electrode
connector in PSS Return Receptacle.
• Verify positive connection of dispersive electrode
connector in PSS Return Receptacle.
• Verify proper application of dispersive electrode on
patient per manufacturer instructions.
• If using a reusable dispersive electrode cable,
verify cable connection and continuity.
