WakeonLAN
ThenetworkadministratorcanturnonacomputerfromamanagementconsolebyusingtheWakeon
LANfeature.
WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabled,manyoperations,suchasdatatransfer,softwareupdates,and
FlashupdatesoftheUEFIBIOS,canbedoneremotelywithoutremoteattendance.Theupdatingprocess
canperformafternormalworkinghoursandonweekends,sothattheusersarenotinterruptedduringwork,
andtheLANtrafficiskepttoaminimum.Itsavestimeandincreasesproductivity.
Note:IfthecomputeristurnedonthroughWakeonLAN,thecomputerstartsfollowtheNetworkBoot
sequence.
AssetIDEEPROM
TheAssetIDEEPROMcontainsinformationaboutthecomputerconfigurationandtheserialnumbersof
thekeycomponents.Italsoincludesanumberofblankfieldswhereyoucanrecordinformationabout
theendusersinyournetwork.
Settingmanagementfeatures
Toenableanetworkadministratortoremotelycontrolyourcomputer,setthefollowingsystem-management
featuresintheThinkPadSetupprogram:
WakeonLAN
NetworkBootsequence
Flashupdate
Note:Ifasupervisorpasswordhasbeenset,youwillberequiredtoenterthesupervisorpasswordwhen
youstarttheThinkPadSetupprogram.
EnablingordisablingtheWakeonLANfeature
WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabledandthecomputerisconnectedtoaLAN,thenetworkadministrator
canstartthecomputerremotelyfromamanagementconsole,usingaremotenetwork-managementprogram.
ToenableordisabletheWakeonLANfeature,dothefollowing:
1.StarttheThinkPadSetupprogram.See“UsingtheThinkPadSetupprogram”onpage85.
2.SelectConfigNetwork.TheNetworksubmenuisdisplayed.
3.SelectacorrespondingoptionfortheWakeonLANfeature.
4.PresstheF10keytosaveandexit.
DefiningaNetworkBootsequence
WhenthecomputerwakesonLAN,thecomputerbootsfromthedeviceasspecifiedontheNetworkBoot
menu,andthenfollowthebootorderlistontheBootmenu.
TodefineaNetworkBootsequence,dothefollowing:
1.StarttheThinkPadSetupprogram.See“UsingtheThinkPadSetupprogram”onpage85.
2.SelectStartupNetworkBoot.Thebootdevicelistisdisplayed.
3.Selectabootdevicetomakeitasthetopbootpriority.
4.PresstheF10keytosaveandexit.
