2.15 Multicast Video
The gimbal can easily be setup to multicast video – in the Connection dialog under Video Stream,
simply click Multicast to use an automatically generated multicast video destination address or
enter a specific address under Advanced settings. Valid multicast addresses are in the range
224.0.0.0 through 239.255.255.255. For multicast video to work however, the network must be
appropriately setup; keep the following notes in mind when multicasting video:
• The gimbal must have an assigned IP address (either from a DHCP device on the network or
via setting a fixed IP address on the gimbal). Multicast will not work if the gimbal is using its
default 169.254.87.45 address.
• A router or a Layer 3 switch that support the IGMP protocol must be present in the system to
distribute the multicast video
• In order to minimize the required radio bandwidth, locate the router or switch on the
ground side of the link
• Keep in mind that multicasting video can substantially increase the required radio
bandwidth, so the gimbal video bitrate may need to be reduced to support a given
architecture
• Many radios will only pass multicast video if the destination address has been specifically
enabled. Be sure to read your radio’s documentation on multicast video prior to use.
