7.1.3 Power Requirements
The HD50 can accept 10V to 34V DC power. The average power draw of the HD50 is 15W to 20W,
but up to 100W is required to accommodate momentary higher currents required during pan and
tilt accelerations. Therefore, a 125-150W power supply at 10-34Vout is recommended.
7.1.4 Thermal Management
Since very little mechanical work is done by the gimbal, approximately 20W of thermal power must
be rejected. Primary heat sources are thermally bonded to the exterior magnesium housings
located at the base of the payload, the base of the clevis, and the base and top of the crown. When
mounting the gimbal, these areas should have access to free air flow; do not encase in foam or any
other thermally insulating material. If the gimbal is installed in an enclosed area without access to
airflow, a fan should be provided for cooling the gimbal.

9.1 External Power Regulators
The Orion External Power Modules provide regulated 24VDC power to the Orion HD25, HD40 and
HD45 gimbals. Regulated power at 24VDC, 3A is required for installations that have a system
voltage other than 24VDC, unregulated power, or have low capacitance power. There are a four
configurations options for the external regulators: two different mechanical options and two input
voltage options.
