• Powder Free latex , Cotton, or nitrile gloves (Gloves)
• Lint free cleaning cloth or tissue (KIMWIPES EX-L)
• Cotton-Tipped Swabs (link)
• Lens Cleaning Solution
o Reagent-Grade Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
o Lens Cleaner (Edmund Optics)
• Compressed Air (link)
• Deionized Water
• Mild soap solution
!! DO NOT USE Acetone on the gimbal as damage will be caused to gimbal covers.
11.1.2.1 Window Cleaning
1) Larger dirt particles should be removed with compressed air before attempting to clean the
optic with lens tissue
2) If more cleaning is necessary:
a. Wear powder free glove to prevent oils and contaminate from hands
b. To prevent scratching ensure all solid debris is removed from window surface before
using cleaning tissue
c. Wet the cleaning tissue with cleaning solution before applying to window
d. Gently wipe the window in one direction once
e. Fold the tissue to expose a clean surface or replace with a new clean tissue
f. Continue to wipe the window surface until clean
g. Use compressed air to blow off residual cleaner solution
3) If finger prints or oil are on the window then a mild soap solution can be used to gently wash
the lens. After soap cleaning repeat cleaning steps with Reagent-Grade Isopropyl Alcohol
(IPA) or lens cleaner to eliminate streaks and soap residue
4) If there is a persistent dirty spot on the window use a cotton tipped swap soaked with
Reagent-Grade Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) or lens cleaner solution to remove spot with small
circular motion. After swab cleaning repeat cleaning steps with Reagent-Grade Isopropyl
Alcohol (IPA) or lens cleaner to eliminate streaks and soap residue.
11.1.2.2 Gimbal External Cover Cleaning
1) Dirt and contamination can be removed from gimbal external covers with a mild soap and
Deionized water solution
2) Take Care not to contaminate window surfaces during cleaning!
3) Use lint free cleaning tissue to clean surface with mild soap and water solution
4) Following soap cleaning wipe surface with Isopropyl Alcohol and dry the surface
5) Return gimbal to storage case or aircraft
