Whole body vibrations
Whole-body vibration emissions on construction machinery are
affected by a number of factors, such as the working mode, ground
conditions, machine speed, etc.
To a large extent the operator can influence the actual vibration
levels, because the operator controls the speed of the machine, its
working mode, the travel path, etc.
Therefore, this may result in several different vibration levels for
the same type of machine. For cab specifications, see page 188.
Guidelines for reducing vibration levels on
earthmoving machines
Q Use the right type and size of machine, with optional equipment
and attachments suitable for a certain application.
Q Make sure that the ground is kept in good condition.
– Remove larger stones and obstacles.
– Fill in any ditches and holes.
– Provide equipment and schedule time for maintaining
terrain conditions.
Q Adjust machine speed and chose a suitable travel path to
minimise the vibration level.
– Travel around obstacles and uneven ground.
– Reduce speed if it is necessary to operate over rough
terrain.
Q Maintain machines according to the manufacturer's
recommendations.
– Tire pressures.
– Brake and steering systems.
– Controls, hydraulic system and linkages.
Q Make sure that the operator seat is maintained and correctly
adjusted.
– Adjust the seat and its suspension according to the
operator weight and height.
– Inspect and maintain the operator seat suspension and
adjustment mechanism.
– Use the seat belt and adjust it correctly.
Q Minimise vibrations during long work cycles or long distance
travelling.
– Transport the machine when there are long distances
between work sites.
Back pain associated with whole body vibrations may be caused
by other risk factors.
The following guidelines may be effective to minimise risks of back
pain:
– Adjust the seat and controls to achieve good posture.
– Adjust the mirrors to minimise twisted posture.
– Provide breaks to reduce long periods of sitting.
– Avoid jumping down from the machine.
– Maintain reasonable weight and physical condition.
