Operation / Getting Started
— WithoutconnectingthepotentiometerwipertothemountingcardorPCBinterface,
applythe"test"+/‐VDCtothetwosidesofthepotentiometer.
— Measurethewiperofthepotentiometerwithavoltmeterordigitalmultimeter,and
verifythatbyturningthepotentiometerinbothdirections,thefullrangeof+/‐VDCis
observableonthepotentiometerwiper.Thisvoltagewillserveasa"test"command.
— Oncethefullrangeof+/‐VDChasbeenverified,turnthepotentiometersothat
approximately0VDCisobservedonthepotentiometerwiper,thenturnoffthe"test"
powersupply.
— Withnovoltagecommandappliedtothepotentiometer,connectthewipertothe
+REFINinputpinonthemountingcardorPCBinterface.Connectthe"test"power
supplygroundorcommontotheAZdrivesignalgroundonthemountingcardorPCB
interface.
• FordrivesthatusePWMandDirectioninput,aFunctionGeneratorshouldbesetupto
generateasimple+5Vsquarewaveatafrequencyof10‐25kHz.ConnecttheFunction
GeneratorsignaltothePWMinputpinontheAZdrive,P1‐1(seedrivedatasheetor
“Pinouts”onpage12forpinlabels)andthecommontothesignalgroundpinontheAZ
drive,P1‐2.
Hall Sensors
1. (ThreePhaseDrivesOnly)WiththeDCpowersupplystillturnedoff,connecttheHall
SensorstotheHallinputpinsonthemountingcardorPCBinterface.Also,connectthe+V
HALLOUT+6VsupplyfromtheAZdrivetotheHallPowerline(consultthemotor
datasheettoseewhichwiresfromthemotoraretheHallInputlinesandHallPowerline).
2. TurnontheDCpowersupplytothesystem.
3. Useadigitalmultimeterorvoltmeter,tomonitortheFaultOutputpin(see“FaultOutput”
onpage32formoreinformation).
4. Manuallyrotatethemotorshaftbyhandafewrevolutions.IfalltheHallSensorsare
functioningproperly,theFaultOutputsignalshouldstaylow.IftheFaultOutputsignal
goeshigh,thiscouldindicateeitherashortorbadconnectionintheHallSensorwires,or
aninvalidcommutationstate.See

commutation.
5. Onceverified,turnofftheDCpowersupply.
Motor WiththeDCpowersupplystillturnedoff,connectthemotorwirestotheappropriatemotor
outputpinsonthemountingcardorPCBinterface.
• Forthreephase(brushless)motors,therewillbethreewirestoconnect.Fornow,connect
thewiresinanyordertothemotoroutputpinsonthemountingcardorPCBinterface.
Thesemayneedtobechangedlaterinordertoproperlycommutatethemotor.
• Forsinglephase(brushed)motors,therewillbetwowirestoconnect.Connectthemin
anyordertothemotoroutputpinsonthemountingcardorPCBinterface.Ifusingathree
phase(brushless)drivewithasinglephase(brushed)motor,therearespecial
considerationsthatmustbetakenintoaccountforthisconfigurationtowork.See

Applying a Command (Analog Input) Atthisstage,everythingthatisneededtotest
operationshouldbeconnectedtotheAZdrivethroughthemountingcardorPCBinterface,all
