OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
27 AU103170 H5B
ENGINE SPEED
Do not run the engine at low idle speed for long periods
of time. This can cause a low operating temperature. Low
operating temperature can cause acids and deposits to
form in the engine oil.
For maximum engine life and machine performance, it is
recommended that you operate the engine at full throttle
when operating conditions permit and when safe to do so.
ENGINE STARTING AIDS
Starting Fluid - Aerosol Can
You will need another person when you are using starting
fluid from an aerosol can.
1. See Starting the Engine in this manual and do steps 1
through 8.
2. Turn the key to START. As soon as the starter motor is
engaged have the other person spray a small amount
of ether into the air intake cap of the air cleaner.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts to run.
NOTE:
If the engine starts and then stops, DO NOT
engage the starter motor again until the starter motor
stops turning. Do not operate the starter motor for more
than 30 seconds at one time. Allow the starter motor to
cool for 30 seconds before you engage the starter motor
again.
3. See Starting the Engine in this manual and do Steps
12 and 13.
Ether Cold Start Aid (if equipped)
THE ETHER COLD START SYSTEM IS OPTIONAL
EQUIPMENT.
NOTE:
For cold weather starting and operating
procedures see Cold Weather Starting and Operating in
Cold Weather in this manual.
IMPORTANT:
The ether injection system on this
machine is designed to deliver a measured amount of
ether directly into the engine to assist starting in cold
temperatures. Manually spraying or using ether in any
unmeasured way may cause damage to the engine and
make a hazardous situation for the person assisting. This
practice is not recommended and is strongly discouraged.
Important Rules When Using Ether
1. Know the correct method for starting your engine
with ether.
2. If you weld, grind or use a cutting torch on the
machine, always remove the starting fluid container
from the machine. Use compressed air to remove any
ether fumes from the area.
3. DO NOT breathe the ether vapor or let the ether
touch your skin.
4. Keep the starting fluid container above and out of
reach of children.
5. When the temperature is above 35° to 40°F (0 to
5°C), remove the starting fluid container from the
machine.
6. Before you discard an empty container, use rubber
gloves and push the valve in the end of the container
to remove any pressure. Do not make a hole in the
container and do not put the container in a fire.
7. DO NOT store ether containers in the operators area.
8. Always read the instructions on the ether container.
COLD WEATHER STARTING
Starting the Engine
The ether start aid injects a measured amount of ether
into the engine during cold weather starting.
WARNING:
Starting fluid (ether) can cause
injury or death. An explosion can result if sparks,
flame, or extreme heat contact the ether in the
starting fluid container. Do not breathe starting
fluid vapors. Wear face protection when you
remove or install a starting fluid container. Use
starting fluid according to instructions in this
manual.
