MACHINE STORAGE
Storage Preparation
If the machine is stored for more than 30 days, it is
recommended that the machine be parked inside a
building. If a building is not available, park the machine in
a dry area on wooden planks and cover the machine with
a waterproof covering.
1. Wash the machine.
2. Lubricate all grease fittings.
3. Paint any areas where the paint has been damaged.
4. Coat hydraulic cylinder rods, valve spools, and control
shafts with Astec Rust and Corrosion Preventive.
Astec Rust and Corrosion Preventive is available from
your dealer.
5. Clean or replace the element for the air filter.
6. Drain the fuel tank. Engines stored over 30 days
need special attention. To prevent gum from
forming in fuel system or on essential carburetor
parts: If fuel tank contains oxygenated or
reformulated gasoline (gas blended with an alcohol
or ether), run engine until it stops from a lack of
fuel, or if fuel tank contains gasoline, either run
engine until it stops from a lack of fuel, or add a
gasoline additive (such as Stabil) to the gasoline in
the tank. If you use a gasoline additive, run the
engine for several minutes to circulate the additive
throughout the carburetor.
7. To prevent rust damage to the internal components of
the engine, do the following steps:
A. Stop the engine and remove the key.
B. While the engine is warm, drain the engine oil.
Reinstall the drain plug.
C. Remove the spark plugs and pour 30 ml (1 oz.) of
clean engine oil into each cylinder. Install the spark
plugs and crank slowly to distribute the oil.
8. Move all hydraulic controls to release any pressure in
the hydraulic system.
9. Remove the battery from the machine. Charge the
battery and store the battery on a wood pallet in a
cool dry area. If possible, keep the battery charged
during the storage period.
10. Put a Do Not Operate tag on the key switch.
NOTE:
Check the battery periodically for the correct
electrolyte level. Test the electrolyte with a hydrometer.
When the hydrometer reading is near 1.215 charge the
battery.
Removal from Storage
DO NOT start the engine until all of the following steps
have been completed.
1. Remove the drain plug from the engine to drain any
condensation from the engine crankcase.
2. Install and tighten the drain plug. Fill the engine with
oil. See Engine Lubrication in this manual.
3. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Install the
battery
4. Fill the fuel tank with gasoline. See Fuel System in
this manual.
5. Check the hydraulic oil level.
6. Check the Reduction Gearbox oil level.
7. Lubricate the machine at all grease fittings.
8. Use petroleum base solvent to remove the Astec Rust
and Corrosion Preventative from the hydraulic
cylinder rods and control valve spools.
9. Remove the Do Not Operate tag
10. Start the engine. It is important that you use the
correct procedure. See Starting the Engine in this
manual.
11. If the cylinders were coated with oil during storage
preparation, the engine may smoke briefly at startup.
This is normal.
