5.4 Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Regeneration *
* Diesel engine powered trucks only.
The exhaust filter, which includes the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel
Particulate Filter (DPF), is a critical component in the engine’s emissions control
system and is required to meet governmental emissions regulations. The DPF
captures diesel particulate matter or “soot” to prevent its release into the atmosphere.
This soot must be eliminated from the DPF to keep it functioning properly. The process
of eliminating collected soot is carefully controlled by the Engine Control Unit (ECU)
and is called ‘regeneration’. During this process, a rise in exhaust temperature occurs
which allows the soot to be oxidised within the DPF.
Under normal machine operation with automatic regeneration enabled the exhaust
filter system requires minimal operator interaction.
To avoid unnecessary build-up of diesel particulates or soot in the exhaust filter
system:
1. Operate the truck with automatic DPF regeneration enabled.
2. Work the engine at high load conditions where possible and keep idling to a
minimum.
3. Use only specified engine oil
(See 6.8 ‘Engine Oil System’ on page 102).
4. Use only ultra-low sulphur fuel
(See 5.2.1 ‘Refuelling - Diesel’ on page 63).
In addition to soot, ash deposits also slowly build up in the DPF. Ash cannot be
removed by the DPF regeneration process. Specialist cleaning is required to remove
ash deposits from the DPF every 6000 operating hours. If the DPF becomes
overloaded with ash deposits before 6000 operating hours overloading is notified via
the MDC. Contact your local Combilift partner to request ash removal.
Caution
Do not power wash the exhaust filter assembly when the external skin
temperature of the assembly exceeds 50 °C (120 °F).
Caution
Temperatures on the exhaust pipe can reach 600°C/1112°F during DPF
regeneration. Danger of burns!
A special engine operating state becomes active during standstill DPF
regeneration, the truck must not be used until the process is complete.
Only activate standstill DPF regeneration when the truck is parked in a well-
ventilated open area that is free of combustible materials.
Disable automatic DPF regeneration when the truck is operating in a
location that is not safe for elevated exhaust temperatures.
