Oncethebikeisopenedupforvalveadjustmentasdescribed
above,thenextstepistopositionthepistonattopdead
center.
Withthemotorcycleinneutral,inserta10mmAllenwrench
throughthecrankcaseportandturnthecrankshaftuntilthe
alternatorscribelineisalignedwiththe
indexregisterinthe
viewingport,asshowninthephotototheright.
Findingthescribelineonthealternatorcovermaybeabitchallenging,asyouhavetogetdownlow
enoughtoseeit.Wearsafetyglasseswhenyoudothis,asoilmayspitoutofthishole.Thisstepis
complicatedbythefactth ateventhoughyou’ve
removedthesparkplug,therotatingthecrankshaftwill
feelasthoughtheenginestillhascompression.Thisisduetothevalvespringsactingtorotatethe
engineasthecrankshaftisturned.
Alignthescribelinewiththeindexregisterinthecenteroftheviewingportonthe
enginecrankcase
andthe“L”and“R”marksarevisibleinthecylinderheadviewingports.Therearescribelinesonthe
camchainsprocketnexttothe“L”and“R”marks,theseshouldbealignedwiththemachinedmarksin
theviewingports’threadedregionsasshownbelow.When
thesemarksarealigned(asshownbelow),
thescribelinewillbevisibleinthecrankcaseviewingport.
Oncetheengineispositionedasdescribedabove,insertafeelergagebetweenthevalveand the
threadedadjustorasshownabove.Thisgapshouldbe0.04mmto0.08mm.Ifthe0.08mm
leafslides
intooeasily,thevalvegapistoolarge.Thatcanresultinnoisyvalves(valvetap).Ifthe0.04mmshim
doesnotslideintothisgap,thevalvegapistootight.Whenweadjustthevalves,wealwayssetthem
to0.08mm.Asthevalvesand
valveseatswear,thewearwillmovethevalvegapthroughthe0.04mm
to0.08mmadjustmentrange.
