6.3.5 Draining the Cooling System
1012 E / 1013 E
z Place a container under sealing plug 1.
z Remove sealing plug 1 from the crankcase.
z Drain off the coolant.
z Tighten sealing plug 1 again.
z If sealing plug 1 is not accessible, the system
can be drained at the engine oil cooler
(coolant duct).
Filling/venting the cooling system:
See section 6.3.6.
Be careful when draining hot
coolant – danger of scalds!
Collect drained coolant and
dispose of according to envi-
ronmental regulat-ions.

z Open radiator cap position 1.
z Loosen vent plug position 2.
z Add coolant up to the maximum marking or
filler limit (heater valve of the system must be
opened – if fitted).
z Tighten vent plug position 2 + sealing plug
position 3.
z Close radiator cap position 1.
z Start engine and warm up until thermostat
opens.
z Switch off engine.
z Check coolant level when the engine is cold
and top up as required.
z Close the radiator sealing plug position 1.
z The cooling systems, which are built in line
with our installation guidelines, are vented
automatically after they have been filled.

z Start engine.
z Run engine until the operating temperature
is reached and the thermostat is open.
z Continue running the engine at high idling
speed.
z The coolant level in the filling aid drops
while the engine is running.
z Fill more coolant until the coolant level at the
filler neck stagnates.
z Remove the funnel and filling aid.
z Collect any overflowing coolant.
z Mount and tighten cooler cap (1).
z Then the engine can be operated at low
idling speed.
z A higher filling speed can be achieved by
the approx. 180 mm high column of liquid in
the filling aid which is screwed to the
coolant filler neck.
z By loosening the upper hollow screw of
the level indicator of the compensation
tank, an extra 0.4 litres of coolant flow into
the system. More coolant can therefore
flow into the air pockets when the engine
then starts running.
z The filling time can be reduced further by
fully opening the heating connection on the
thermostat housing when filling. The air
can therefore escape from the engine
more easily.
