astern of the target. This manoeuvre also clearly
indicates to the target vessel your change of
course.
Scenario 2 Speed change examples
1. Speeding up Increasing vessel speed to
pass ahead of the target vessel. Proceed with
caution, there is always an inherent risk when
passing in front of other vessels.
2. No change Not changing speed or course is
not recommended as it may result in a collision.
3. Slowing down Slowing down slightly may
result in the 2 Interception zones closing up or
merging into a single zone.
4. Slowing down Slowing down a sufcient
amount will allow the target vessel to pass safely
ahead of your vessel, avoiding the Interception
zone(s).
Example scenario 3— Both vessels
travelling at the same speed
Note: These scenarios are examples provided for
guidance only.
Course change
When both vessels are travelling at the same speed,
course alterations should be made in accordance
with the guidance provided in examples 1 and 2.
Speed change
When both vessels are travelling at the same speed,
altering your speed will change the collision scenario
to one of the scenarios detailed in examples 1 and 2.
Enabling Target interception
Target interception graphics are disabled by
default; they can be enabled from the Target
interceptions page, which is accessible from the
Chart application’s menu.
1. Ensure the AIS Overlay is enabled.
The AIS Overlay can be enabled from the
Overlays menu (Menu > Presentation >
Overlays).
2. Open the Target Interception page: (Menu >
Radar & AIS > Collision Avoidance > Target
Interceptions, or Menu > AIS > Collision
Avoidance > Target Interceptions).
3. Select the slider control so that On is displayed.
4. Select the distance ahead box and select the
required Intercept distance.
5. Select Back or Close to return to the previous
menu or Chart application screen.
Target interception graphics will now be displayed
for all AIS targets that will cross your current course
within the specied Intercept distance, based on
your current speed and the target’s course and
speed derived from their AIS data.
Showing Target interception for
individual targets
Target interception graphics can be displayed
for individual targets that you want to track or
rendez-vous with.
1. Ensure that the AIS Overlay is enabled.
The AIS Overlay can be enabled from the
Overlays menu (Menu > Presentation >
Overlays).
2. Select an AIS target.
3. From the context menu select Show
Interceptions so that On is selected.
