Wi-Fi signal strength
Wi-Fi signal strength is measured in decibel-milliwatts
(dBm). The signal strength of the network you
are currently connected to is usually represented
graphically by a Wi-Fi symbol.
The signal strength range represented by each lled
bar is determined independently by each device
manufacturer. However, in general the performance
will be similar.
• 1/4 — Unable to maintain a connection, usually
accompanied by very poor connection speed
(LightHouse
™
MFD: –150dBm or worse).
• 2/4 — Intermittent disconnects and reconnects,
usually accompanied by a slow connection speed
(LightHouse
™
MFD: –80dBm to –149dBm).
• 3/4 — Reliable connection with good connection
speed (LightHouse
™
MFD: –70dBm to –79dBm).
• 4/4 — Reliable connection, excellent connection
speed (LightHouse
™
MFD: –55dBm or better).
Logging in to an access point / mobile
hotspot
Depending on the type of network you are connecting
to you may need to login using a connected smart
device to gain internet access.
1. Connect your MFD to the Wi-Fi access point /
hotspot.
2. Connect your smart device to the MFD’s Wi-Fi
connection.
3. Open the web browser on your smart device.
You should be redirected to a landing page.
4. Enter the username and password for the
network.
Removing a Wi-Fi Access point /
mobile hotspot
Once your MFD has connected to a network
the details will be saved and the MFD will try to
re-connect to that network whenever it is in range, if
the MFD has no active connection.
From the Wi-Fi Networks list: (Homescreen >
Set-up > Wireless Connections > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi
Networks)
1. Select the network that you want to remove.
Networks not currently active or in range will not
be displayed.
2. Select Forget from the Network’s details page.
The MFD will no longer connect to this network,
to re-connect to this network refer to the
21.2
Connecting to a Wi-Fi access point / hotspot
section.
Switching the connected MFD
In systems with multiple MFDs, you can switch which
MFD has the active connection to the Wi-Fi Access
point / mobile hotspot. This may be useful when
connecting to Wi-Fi at a Marina, an MFD located on
the Flybridge may receive a stronger signal than
an MFD installed below decks. If the MFD you are
using is not the MFD with an active connection then
the Wi-Fi Networks page will identify which MFD is
connected to the network.
From the MFD you want to connect:
1. Select the network from the Wi-Fi Networks
list: (Homescreen > Set-up > Wireless
Connections > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi Networks)
The connection will be switched to the second
MFD.
Changing the Wi-Fi Channel
You cannot change Wi-Fi channel whilst your MFD
is connected to an access point. Any devices
connected to your MFD will temporarily lose
connection whilst the MFD changes its channel.
1. Disconnect your MFD from the Wi-Fi network it is
currently connected to (e.g. marina Wi-Fi access
point).
i. Select Wi-Fi Networks from the Wi-Fi
menu : (Homescreen > Set-up > Wireless
connection > Wi-Fi).
ii. Select the currently connected network.
iii. Select Forget.
To reconnect to a forgotten network you
will need to know the network’s SSID and
Passphrase.
iv. Select Back to go back to the Wi-Fi menu.
2. Select Wi-Fi Sharing.
3. Select Wi-Fi Channel.
4. Select the Wi-Fi Channel that you want your MFD
to use.
The best Wi-Fi Channel can be established by
using a free Wi-Fi Analyzer app from the relevant
app store, that can show network trafc per
channel. You should change your Wi-Fi channel
to a channel that has the least amount of trafc
(other networks).
