About This Book
Each chapter of this book contains installation instructions for the
9401
System Unit and the attaching
devices. Follow the sequence of the chapters, beginning with Chapter
1.
Note: You may be instructed
to
skip a chapter if the information does not relate to your system.

System Operating Conditions
The operation and reliability of the
9401
can be adversely affected by exposure to extreme temperature
conditions such as those that might develop within a vehicle.
In
addition, if the machine
is
moved
between places with very different temperature and humidity levels, condensation can build up that can
cause damage to the equipment.
When traveling, sufficient time should be allowed for equipment to adjust to the environmental changes
before unpacking or connecting ac power. Failure to permit sufficient time for the
9401
to acclimate con-
stitutes system misuse and will void the warranty.
Airport Security
The
9401
System Unit can pass through most X-ray equipment used to inspect carry-on luggage
in
air-
ports. However, magnetic inspection equipment may damage components or cause loss of magnetically
stored data including software. If you are not sure if the magnetic inspection equipment
is
safe for com-
puters, ask the operator.
Use the following procedure if a manual inspection
is
requested and it is necessary to power
on
the
9401
system:
1.
Unpack the
9401
unit and its power cord.
2.
Insert the power cord in its socket at the rear of the system.
3. Plug the other end of the power cord into
an
electrical outlet.
4. Open the front cover to show that the Function/Data display lights.
An
IPL should not
be
necessary to complete the inspection. However, if an IPL is required, a console
display must
be
attached to the
9401
System Unit. After approximately 20 minutes, the processor activity
light on the control panel indicates that the IPL is complete. Unplugging or powering off the system before
the IPL is complete may cause the next IPL to take more time
to
complete.
