In Windows NT 4.0 you can:
u
start the system from a powered-down state by pressing the Standby button momentarily.
The system powers on and loads the operating system.
u
start the Automatic Shutdown Utility by pressing the Standby button momentarily when
the operating system is active.
u
power down the system by pressing and holding the Standby button for 4 seconds, after
selecting the shutdown option from Shut Down on the Start menu. The system powers
down all devices and shuts off the operating system.
CAUTION Be sure to select Shut Down from the Start menu, and then select the shutdown option,
before powering off the system with the Standby button. Powering off the system simply by
using the Standby button can cause data loss and/or file corruption.
CAUTION Press the Standby button only to start or power-off the system, or to start the Automatic
Shutdown Utility. Though the system board and BIOS both support Suspend mode,
Windows NT 4.0 does not support this feature. If you use the Standby button to engage
Suspend mode from within Windows NT 4.0, you must power down the system before you
can return to the operating system.

Understanding System Power States
The advanced power management features of the system help you save energy, prolong
system life, and provide for future functionality, such as remote system wake up. See the
online System Introduction for details.
NOTE Remember that the system is
always
powered on when it is connected to AC power.
One of the power management features is the implementation of power states. The upper
LED on the front panel indicates the system’s current power state, as shown in the following
table.
