Do you have a question about the Leica Microsystems M320 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Leica M320 surgical microscope is an advanced optical instrument designed for enhancing visibility during surgical procedures through magnification and illumination. It is suitable for observation, documentation, and human and veterinary medical treatment in hospitals, clinics, and other human medical institutions. The device is intended for professional use only and must be operated by qualified and trained personnel.

Function Description

The M320 surgical microscope provides a clear, magnified view of the surgical field, aided by integrated LED illumination. It features a 5-step manual apochromatic magnification changer with increments of 6.4x, 10x, 16x, 25x, and 40x. Illumination intensity is controlled via a dedicated knob on the optics carrier. The microscope also includes filter and diaphragm controls for white light, an orange filter, and spot illumination.

The device incorporates a balancing system that allows the optics to be moved to any position without tilting or falling, provided it is properly balanced. Footbrakes on the stand's wheels ensure stability during operation and allow for controlled movement when released.

For documentation, the M320 can be equipped with an integrated 4K/FULL HD video and photo camera or an integrated video adapter for external C-mount cameras. The camera supports video resolutions up to 3840x2160 pixels and 12Mpx photo resolution. It offers playback functions for video and photo, and all media can be stored on an SD card. Camera settings, including white balance, exposure, resolution, and image orientation, can be adjusted via an on-screen menu using an IR remote control or two hard keys on the camera body. The camera also supports Wi-Fi streaming and data transfer.

Usage Features

  • Ergonomic Design: The M320 supports various binocular tubes (e.g., 5°-25°, inclined, 180° variable, straight, 30°-150° variable, 45° inclined) and accessories like the ErgonOptic Dent (52° swivel angle) and ErgoWedge (5°-25° variable viewing angle) to improve ergonomics and comfort during long procedures.
  • Easy Accessory Installation: Accessories are installed using a dovetail interface, secured with clamping screws. Handle sleeves are available in sterilizable/disinfectable gray and disinfectable white versions.
  • Parfocality Adjustment: The microscope allows for precise parfocality adjustment with or without a camera and monitor, ensuring consistent sharpness across the entire magnification range. Diopter settings on the eyepieces can be individually adjusted.
  • Illumination Control: The design LED illuminator offers five dimming levels, and the main illumination can be adjusted for intensity and filtered for specific needs (white light, orange filter, spot illumination).
  • Transportation Mode: The swing arm can be folded and articulation brakes tightened for safe transport. A wedge is provided to facilitate movement over thresholds up to 20 mm.
  • Sterile Components: Handle sleeves and magnification changer caps are steam- or gas-sterilizable, ensuring aseptic conditions during surgery. Protective glass for objectives is also sterilizable.
  • Video Camera Functionality: The integrated camera offers various capture modes (Normal, Burst), date/time display, filename display, and image orientation options (Normal, Flip Horizontal, Flip Vertical, Flip Both). It also includes Automatic Light Control (ALC) with different modes (No Mask, Grid, S Circle, M Circle, L Circle) for optimal exposure.

Maintenance Features

  • Care Instructions: Regular cleaning of optical components with spirits and microfiber cloths, and other surfaces with water and detergent, is recommended. Dust covers should be used when not in operation.
  • Reprocessing: Resterilizable products, such as clip-on handles, rotary knobs, lever extensions, and protective glasses, can be steam-autoclaved (134 °C, t > 10 min) or sterilized with ethylene oxide (max. 60 °C). Optical components may form dots or streaks after steam autoclaving, potentially reducing optical performance.
  • Fuse Replacement: The device includes easily accessible fuses in a fuse holder within the power socket, allowing for replacement by authorized personnel after disconnecting the power cable.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The user manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting section for common issues related to the microscope and video camera, including problems with movement, illumination, image quality, and remote control functionality.
