Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdrive,youalsomight
needtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFIBIOS,or
recoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thistopicwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithpropercareandkeepit
intopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsysteminyourcomputer,youneedtoinstalltheSupplementlesandThinkPad
devicedriversforitatthesametime.Thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectoriesofyoursolid
statedriveorharddiskdrive:
•TheSupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
•ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
•ThepreloadedsoftwareapplicationsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Notes:
•Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddisk,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
•IfyoucannotndtheSupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andapplicationsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,goto:

Beforeyoubegin
Note:IfyourcomputerisequippedwithbothaharddiskdriveandanmSATAsolidstatedrive,youare
notrecommendedtousethemSATAsolidstatedriveasabootabledevice.ThemSATAsolidstatedriveis
designedanddevelopedfor“cache”functionpurposeonly.IfyouusethemSATAsolidstatedriveasa
bootabledevice,itsreliabilityisnotguaranteed.
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•CopyallthesubdirectoriesandlesintheC:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoid
losinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printthesectionsyouwilluse
Notes:
•TheUEFIBIOSfeaturesaresupportedonlyonthe64-bitversionoftheWindows7operatingsystem.
•IfyouwanttostartWindowsRecoveryEnvironment(WinRE)usingthe64-bitversionoftheMicrosoft
WindowsInstallationDVD,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPad
Setup.TheUEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindowsoperatingsystem
imagewasinstalled.Otherwise,youwillseeanerror.
