MODEL 9DP-1 Operator’s Manual
Ludlum Measurements, Inc. 54 December 2015
Operational Test
To assure proper operation of the instrument between calibrations and periods of
non-use, an instrument operational check, including battery test, should be
performed prior to use.
The battery test is as described in Section 8.1.
An operational test is performed by placing a radioactive check source against the
detector to induce an upscale reading. Ludlum recommends a 10 µCi
137
Cs check
source for this purpose. This is an exempt quantity in the USA so no license is
required to purchase and receive this source. You can purchase it from Ludlum
by ordering Part Number 01-5231. Several other countries only permit 0.25 µCi
137
Cs as an exempt status, so check your local regulations.
A reference reading with your check source should be obtained at the time of
initial calibration or as soon as possible and recorded for all future comparisons.
If the instrument subsequently fails to read within 20% of the reference reading,
it should be sent to a calibration facility for recalibration.
A 10 µCi
137
Cs source should result in a reading of approximately 2-3 mR/hr (20-
30 µSv/h).
To verify operation, turn on the instrument and allow it to stabilize for
approximately 30 seconds. Once this procedure has been completed, the
instrument is ready for use.
