3.16.1 ECG Troubleshooting
MESSAGE/PROBLEM REASON SOLUTION
Noisy ECG traces 1 Loose or dry electrodes.
2Defective electrode wires.
3Patient cable or leads are
routed too close to other
electrical devices.
1Apply fresh, moist
electrodes.
2Replace wires as
necessary.
3Eliminate 60Hz
interference.
Excessive Electro-surgical
Interference
1Wrong ECG cable used. 1Use ESIS ECG cable with
internal filter block.
NOTE: Respiration
monitoring via the
ECG electrodes will
not be available
when using an ESIS
ECG cable.
Muscle Noise 1 Inadequate skin
preparation prior to
application of electrode,
tremors, tense subject,
and/or poor electrode
placement.
1Repeat skin preparation
and electrode location
procedures.
2Apply fresh, moist
electrodes.
3Avoid areas of the torso
that are very muscular.
Excessive alarms: heart rate,
lead fault
1Electrodes dry
2Alarm limits set too close
to patient's normal heart
rate.
3R-wave wrong size.
4Excessive patient
movement or muscle
tremor.
1Re-prep skin and apply
fresh, moist electrodes.
2Readjust.
3Must have a higher
amplitude than the other
ECG waves, like the P
and T waves.
4Reposition electrodes and
secure with tape, if
necessary.
ECG Noise 1 External interference.
2Patient movement.
1Check patient.
2Check electrode contacts
/reposition electrodes/
cable.
3Check environment for
source of interference.
No ECG Waveform 1 Gain set too low.
2Lead wires and patient
cable not fully or properly
inserted.
3Cable or lead wires
damaged.
1Readjust as required (Set
via the Size key).
2Check for proper
insertion.
3Check with lead
continuity tester.
