Remove lubrication fitting on the stuffing box. Insert Special Tool (PD-33A or
PD-34B Packing Drift) into the stuffing box and gently tap on the end
of
the Special
Tool with a ball-peen hammer (Figure 8-7).

Drive the drift tool in as far
as
it will go and the packing will come out (Figure
8-8).

Clean and inspect the surface of all parts. Replace damaged or worn parts. Do not reuse
worn plungers, bushings or stuffing boxes. Plungers and bushings must be within
recommended maximum clearances
--
it is of critical importance that a close tolerance
must be maintained between the backup ring and the plunger. The diametral clearance
for a new Backup Ring (Item #15) is
.002 to .004" (.051
to
.102 mm).
You
must
replace
the
backup
ring
if
the
clearance
has
reached .007" (.178
mm).
