Diesel Particulate Filter
Regeneration
Regeneration
Note: This section is only applicable to engines that
have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) traps both soot
and ash. Regeneration is the removal of soot from
the DPF.
For additional information on the regeneration of the
DPF, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and
Adjusting.
Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR)
The SCR system is used to reduce the amount of
NOx emission from the engine. The SCR system is
used during normal engine operation. The SCR
catalyst should not have to be cleaned or serviced. A
problem with the SCR system will cause a diagnostic
or event code to become active.
For additional information on the SCR system, refer
to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting.

Engine Monitoring System
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) provides a
comprehensive, programmable engine monitoring
system for this engine. The ECM monitors specific
engine operating parameters in order to detect
abnormal conditions that may develop. The ECM will
generate an event code if a specific engine
parameter exceeds an acceptable range that is
defined by the engine monitoring system. The ECM
will react with an action that is dependent on the
severity of the condition. For information on event
codes, refer to Troubleshooting, “Event Codes”.
The following actions may be initiated by the ECM.
These actions are dependent on the severity of the
condition.
Illumination of a warning lamp or warning alarm
Engine derate
Engine shutdown
Three possible responses may be available for each
parameter. Some of the responses are not available
for some of the parameters. Refer to Table 6 .
