Troubleshooting Test Steps
Values Results
6. Check the Wiring for a Short to Supply Voltage
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the suspect line heater.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage between the line
heater supply terminal on the harness connector and a known
ground source.
The measurement should indicate battery voltage.
E. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage between the line
heater ground terminal on the harness connector and a known
ground source.
The measurement should indicate 0V.
Battery voltage for
the supply terminal
0V for the line heater
ground terminal
Result: At least one of the measurements does indicate
the expected value.
There is a short in the wiring between the 31–pin con-
nector and the suspect line heater.
Repair: Replace the faulty wiring.
Result: The voltage measurements indicate the ex-
pected values.
Contact the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
7. Create an Open Circuit at the DEF Line Heater
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the connector for the suspect line heater.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Use the electronic
service tool to override the suspect line heater.
D. Check for active diagnostic codes.
Short circuit Result: A -6 diagnostic code was active before discon-
necting the line heater. A -5 diagnostic code is active
with the line heater disconnected.
Repair: Temporarily connect a replacement for the sus-
pect valve to the harness.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Use the electronic
service tool to override the suspect line heater and
check for active diagnostic codes. Wait at least 30 sec-
onds in order for the codes to be displayed.
If the fault is eliminated, reconnect the suspect line heat-
er. If the fault returns, permanently install the replace-
ment line heater. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly
for the correct procedure.
Result: A -6 diagnostic code is still active with the line
heater disconnected.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
