8. Perform an ““Aftertreatment System Functional Test””
A. Establish communication between the electronic service tool
and the engine ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, “Electronic Serv-
ice Tools”, if necessary.
B. Perform an “Aftertreatment System Functional Test” using the
electronic service tool.
Successful
completion of
test
Result: The test completed successfully.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The test did not complete successfully.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
9. Check for an Engine Misfire
A. Establish communication between the electronic service tool
and the engine ECM.
B. Perform a “Cylinder Cutout Test” using the electronic service
tool.
Misfire Result: A misfire was detected.
Repair: Replace or repair the failed component or
components.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result: A misfire was not detected.
Proceed to Test Step 11.
10. Check the Aftertreatment System for Oil or Fuel
A. Remove excess oil or fuel from the piping with a clean cloth.
B. Remove the Clean Emissions Module (CEM). Refer to Disas-
sembly and Assembly, “Clean Emissions Module - Remove and
Install”.
C. Support the CEM over a suitable container with the exhaust in-
let downwards. Leave the CEM to drain for 8 hours.
D. Check the quantity of drained oil or fuel in the container.
CEM Result The volume of drained oil or fuel is greater than
1.0 L (1.05669 qt).
Repair: Install a replacement CEM. Refer to Disassembly
and Assembly, “Clean Emissions Module - Remove and
Install”.
Return the unit to service.
Result The volume of drained oil or fuel is less than 1.0 L
(1.05669 qt).
Proceed to Test Step 11.
11. Check the Exhaust System for Leaks
A. Check the entire exhaust system for leaks.
Exhaust leaks Result: There were not any exhaust leaks found.
Repair: For a 3216-7 (E1431 (2)) diagnostic code replace
the intake NOx sensor.
For a 3226-7 (E1432 (2)) diagnostic code replace the out-
let NOx sensor.
Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Nitrogen Oxide Sen-
sor - Remove and Install” for the correct procedure.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
Result: There were exhaust leaks found.
