RC4500 Antenna Controller Chapter 4 Software Configuration / Installation
63
4.2 Initial Calibration
This section provides steps to complete the initial calibration of the RC4500 antenna controller with the
antenna. Some fine-tuning of the calibration and other configuration parameters will need to be completed
in the Final Calibration section.
4.2.1 Position Sense Direction
NOTE: be careful when initially moving a mount since limit switches may not yet be configured
correctly. In MANUAL mode, movement will stop whenever a particular jog key is released. The
RC4500 may also always be turned off to stop movement.
If an AIU is used, it should already have been wired such that the axes are all moving in the correct
direction with local jog controls (if any.)
Whether the motors are controlled via an AIU or directly via the RC4500 low-voltage DC motor drive, the
motor directions should be verified before continuing.
For each axis, verify the following jog commands, antenna axis direction and displayed position direction
match the following table:
Keypad Jog Command Antenna Axis
Movement Direction
Axis Sensed Position on LCD Display
EL Up Up Displayed Position Increases
AZ CW CW
<1>
Displayed Position Increases
POL CW CW
<2>
Displayed Position Increases
<1> Azimuth antenna movement is as viewed by an observer located above the antenna.
<2> Polarization movement is defined as seen by an observer looking from behind the antenna out towards the arc of satellites.
If any of the three axes physically move in the opposite direction as was commanded at the keypad, the
motor wiring should be corrected before continuing.
For the Elevation axis and Azimuth axis, if the displayed position decreases instead of increases, then the
Resolver Sense Direction may be changed in the CONFIG mode, ELEVATION CALIBRATION or
AZIMUTH CALIBRATION.
CONFIG-ELEV
DOWN: 0.000 UP: 90.000
PSF:10431 ROFF:-180.000 DIR:0
DOWN LIMIT <-20.000-120.000 DEGREES>
DIR: COUNT DIRECTION <0-NORMAL 1-REVERSED>
This item specifies the polarity of the raw resolver angle. If the resolver angle decreases when the
antenna mount moves UP (CW), then the DIR item must be described as reversed.
For the Polarization axis, if a resolver is used, the CONFIG mode POLARIZATION CALIBRATION may be
changed in the same way as EL and AZ using the DIR entry.
If the Polarization axis implements a potentiometer for position sense, then the polarity of the sensed
direction may be changed by reversing the positive and negative terminal wires to the pot.
