Istruction Manual for Operation and Maintenance SPX-960:
5.2 WIRE ROPES
Daily check that the ropes are clean from deposits (use brushes, solvents or compressed air) and that
they are covered with a layer of protective grease or oil (see «5.11 Oil and lubricant table») especially in
the sections where the rope bends to go through the pulleys.
Daily check all the visible parts of the wire ropes for possible deterioration and deformation. Take the
example provided in Fig. 53 as a reference.
DANGER
Report any visible and suspected deterioration of the wire rope. Have the wire rope inspected by
qualifi ed and authorized personnel.
Refer to section «4.9 Wire ropes» for rope specifi cations and installation.
5.2.1 WIRE ROPE WEAR
Great wire wear is the fi rst step to wire breakage. Worn wires beyond an acceptable limit must be consi-
dered as broken wires.
The limit is reached when the wire diameter has visibly halved compared to the original diameter. When
the wires start being worn, we recommend repeating the periodic inspections more frequently.
Figure 52 shows some examples of wire rope deterioration which require replacement.
A) Slackened strands.
B) Tightened strands.
1) Looped strand.
2) Strand relaxation due to small diameter pulley.
3) Damage caused by cable derailment.
4) Damage caused by incorrect cable winding on winch.
5) Problem due to small diameter pulleys.
6) Problem due to worn groove pulleys.
