ADJUST DRIVE CHAIN
The drive chain stretches during normal use and
requires periodic adjustment. A loose chain will result in
accelerated wear of the chain and sprockets.
The symptoms of a loose chain are growling or thumping
during hard acceleration.
The service limit for chain free play is 2.5º to 5º rotation of
the motor when the driven sprocket is locked in position.
Too loose or too tight will result in excessive chain noise.
Inspection
Set the park brake, insert a screwdriver into the fan
opening and move the fan blades back and forth. The fan
should easily move 0.125 to 0.25 Inch (3 to 6 mm). This
represents the service limits specied at the beginning
of this procedure.
Adjustment
1: Place a small oil drain pan under the chain case.
2: Loosen but do not remove the three drive motor
mounting nuts.
Note: A small amount of oil may come out when
the drive motor mounting bolts are loosened.
3: Apply the parking brake.
4: Loosen the chain adjuster jam nut.
5: Tighten or loosen the adjustment screw so that
the fan free play is at the minimum of the service
limits.
Note: If there is less than 1/16” (1.5 mm) of threads
left on the adjustment screw (see illustration)
then the drive chain has stretched beyond
service limits and should be replaced.
Refer to section Chain Case for information
regarding replacing the drive chain.
6: Tighten the adjustment screw jam nut and motor
mounting nuts.
7: Wipe off any oil that may have come from behind
the motor.
8: Lower the drive wheels to the ground.
9: Reconnect the battery
10: Test drive the vehicle.
