Circular Polarization
This section considers the case of right circularly polarized light incident on the QWP . Circular
polarization will be transformed into linear polarization by a quarter waveplate. Rotating the
waveplate rotates the azimuth angle of the generated linear polarization. When plotted on the
Poincaré sphere, the polarization state moves around the equator as the QWP rotates. A full
revolution of the waveplate results in two turns around the equator (green trace on the figure
below):
After passing the linear polarizer, the frequency of the resulting amplitude modulation is propor-
tional to twice the rotation frequency of the QWP, and the phase of this component is constant
and in this example zero:
