The degree of polarization was determined to be 99.588%, and this value was used to correct
the ER value for DOP. Using the numbers given in this measurement example, the corrected
value of ER is:
Summarize
· Using the polarimeter, an ER of 21.51 dB was measured.
· The ER value corrected for ellipticity (the center ellipticity was measured to be -0.95°) was
19.93 dB.
· Taking into account the measured DOP of 99.588 %, the corrected for center ellipticity
and DOP extinction ratio is 19.12 dB. Note: This is the ER that would have been meas-
ured by an instrument, such as the Thorlabs GmbH ERM100, that uses the spinning ana-
lyzer technique.
The difference between the uncorrected and the fully corrected ER measurement is more than
2 dB. When comparing ER measurements made by polarimeters and instruments using the
spinning analyzer technique, it is necessary to correct the polarimeter's ER measurements for
both ellipticity and DOP.
The PAX1000 ER measurement software allows the user to correct the ER measurement result
for center ellipticity or DOP or both.
