Installing the 1525 Pump 36

2.3.3 Making IEEE-488 Connections
The 1525µ and 1525EF Pumps connect to the MassLynx workstation using IEEE-488
cables. Most chromatography devices are shipped with a 1-meter cable with
dual-receptacle connectors at each end. The MassLynx workstation ships with a 2-meter
cable with a dual-receptacle connector at one end and a single-receptacle connector
(GPIB) at the other end.
Note:
Before connecting the pump, refer to the IEEE-488 guidelines below.
IEEE-488 Guidelines
Follow these guidelines to install and use the system:
• Keep all devices powered on while your system is in use.
• While a system is active on the IEEE-488 bus, do not power on or off any other device
on the bus.
• The maximum number of devices that can be connected together to form one
interface system is 15 (14 instruments plus the National Instruments GPIB card).
• The maximum cable length to connect the devices and the GPIB connector in one
interface system is 2 meters (6.5 feet) times the number of devices, or 20 meters (65
feet), whichever is smaller.
• The maximum cable length between two devices is 4 meters (13 feet).
• The minimum cable length between two devices is 1 meter (3.25 feet).
Connecting IEEE-488 Devices
Note:
This procedure assumes that there are no other IEEE-488 devices (such as a
detector) electronically connected to the MassLynx workstation. If there are other devices
already connected to the workstation, connect the pump to the existing chain of devices
(see Figure 2-2
). The order in which you connect IEEE-488 devices is not important.
To make the IEEE-488 connections for the MassLynx system:
1. Connect the single-receptacle end of the 2-meter IEEE-488 cable to the National
Instruments GPIB card in the MassLynx workstation (Figure 2-2
).

Attention:
Cable lengths greater than the maximum values or less than the minimum
values can cause IEEE-488 communication failures. Use the minimal cable lengths to
ensure proper signal transmission.
