8. Repeat until the first side of the log is cut as desired. Set aside the usable flitches (boards with bark
on one or both sides). They can be edged on the sawmill later.
9. Remove the leveling wedge if it was used. Release the clamps and turn the log 90 or 180 degrees.
Make sure the flat on the log is placed flat against the side supports if turned 90 degrees. Make
sure it is placed on the bed rails if turned 180 degrees. If the log was turned 90 degrees and has to
be leveled on the bed rails, see Section 3.6 for more informations.
10. Repeat the steps above until the log is square. Then cut boards from the cant.
Example: Remember that the blade cuts a 1/16 - 1/8” (1.6 - 3.2mm) wide kerf. If you want 1”
(25 mm) thick boards, lower the saw head 1 1/16 - 1 1/8” (27 - 29 mm) for each board.
2.17 Blade Height Scale
See Figure 2-16. The blade height scale is mounted on the vertical mast. It includes:
a blade height indicator,
a centimeter scale (or a quarter inch scale).
Blade Height Indicator
The blade height indicator has two horizontal, red lines on both sides. Readings should be taken
with eyes level with the indicator, when the two red lines are in line. This will allow to avoid the
parallax error (different scale readings depending on the angle of vision).
Scale
The horizontal red line on the blade height indicator shows how many centimeters the bottom of
the blade is above the bed of the mill. If you know the height of your blade at each cut, you can
determine the thickness of lumber you are sawing.
Example: You want to cut 1” (25 mm) random width boards from a log. Position the blade for the
first cut. Move the saw head to an even measurement on the scale. Make a trim cut. Return the
