TECHNICAL TIPS
3) Reverse:
When the shift lever is set to the reverse position, the shift cam assembled to the shift rod
rotates in the opposite direction from the direction at the forward position. If the rotating force
of the shift cam overcomes the pressure of the spring holding the shift slider, the shift slider
moves, and the dog clutch also moves together with the shift slider. When the dog clutch
reaches the position to mesh with the reverse gear, the 2 balls installed to the shift slider fit in
the groove in the inside wall of the propeller shaft and are held in position by the force of a
spring, in the same way as for the neutral position of the slider. In this way, the dog clutch is
kept meshed with the reverse gear.
